DeeAnn and I just signed a lease on a new place last night, thanks to fastbusy.com and craigslist! I'm happy.

The new place is a little farther from work, so my bike ride will be longer, but I could use the exercise; it's no farther from the train station, and is closer to downtown. Plus there's more space than we currently have, albeit no garage or real backyard. But given that we have to move (long story), this is a good situation to end up in.

We agonized for a couple of days, trying to decide between this house and an apartment complex a little farther south. The house is more expensive, though still less than what we're paying now, and incurs slightly more up-front costs (larger security deposit, etc.). DeeAnn was worried about the money, and the fact that we'll be on a busy street with no reserved parking. I like the better location, that we won't share walls with anyone else, and that it has character.

It feels like a place to live, not just a place we inhabit. The apartment complex may have had some more amenities-- a pool, a fitness center, every room wired with cat5-- but it was a little impersonal, more like a hotel than a home. Now, I like staying at a nice hotel as much as the next guy (or DeeAnn), but I don't think I'd want to live in a hotel. It's transient. Unsettled.

I guess we'll eventually think seriously about buying our own house. But first a car...
