07/24/2003 Archived Entry: "Coast to Coast" Pop quiz: what's the difference between San Francisco and New York? In 1978, former San Francisco city supervisor Dan White shot and killed Mayor George Moscone and supervisor Harvey Milk in their offices in City Hall. White confessed, but the public still had to endure the ridiculous "Twinkie defense" during his trial, and the sentence was a slap on the wrist-- five years with parole. White later committed suicide. Yesterday, Othniel Askew, a would-be candidate for New York City Council, shot and killed councilman James Davis in the chamber balcony at City Hall. Richard Burt, a plainclothes police officer on the chamber floor, drew his weapon and put six bullets into Askew, killing him on the spot. What the difference between San Francisco and New York? New York City doesn't take shit from anybody.
